Attracting Views & Sales In the Land of AI Search
By Ray Pastoors, Ray Pastoors, Business Coach & Digital Marketing Expert
Can you imagine a world where your customers find your products without ever landing on your website? That’s the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) search, and it’s changing the way we stay visible online.
In the USA, UK, and India, AI has been competing with the likes of ChatGPT, which Microsoft invested in, and with Google, the behemoth with the most global market share.
And Australia has started to see the early signs.
As technology moves fast, so too does the way people discover and shop online.
What is AI, and how is it changing search habits?
What AI stands for
AI, or Artificial Intelligence, refers to a computer system that collects a wide variety of information and processes it to provide real-time answers to users.
AI tools can use historical information collected from the World Wide Web or browse the internet. Some do both. And they are programmed to behave in specific ways. Meaning no two are the same.

Unlike traditional search experiences, AI tools can handle more complex queries and have a two-way conversation with you. That means it can provide more relevant material to your questions.
Although with all this computer power and knowledge behind it, it can still make mistakes and hallucinate, just like a human.
Understanding organic search
Search, put simply, is about content matching user needs.
Traditional search, such as when we look for a dress or sneakers on Google, is a key part of brand discovery, consideration and purchase.
58% of unbranded queries for retailers are found by search.
In recent years, search engines have also introduced photo search experiences, such as Google Lens, which lets you take a photo of an item and find others like it.
No longer do people have to rely solely on words to find what they need.
Younger people, including Generation Z, also rely heavily on platforms like TikTok and Instagram to find what they want online. And search engines like Google have decided to bring their content into the search experience to remain relevant.
Search habits are evolving globally
ChatGPT reached 1 million users on its platform in just 5 days. It has even launched its own web browser, Atlas, offering agent-like bot experiences that help you compare and book restaurants, hotels, and locate nearby stores within seconds.
Google introduced AI Overviews and AI Mode. The AI Overviews provide a short snippet of information, most commonly used to answer question-based queries.
Some say they discourage around 34% of website clicks. Meaning, lost traffic for publishers and businesses.
AI Mode is Google’s way of competing with ChatGPT and provides more detailed answers. Google also has Gemini, but has struggled to grow usage compared to its competitor.
Is Google search dead?

Whilst AI search has become a buzzword on social feeds, and some experts say the days of Google are numbered, the data tells a different story.
No longer is it about optimising for search.
